Document Chatbots

Create document chatbots

  1. Under your course page, create a document chat module by clicking the “Document Chatbot” button.

  2. Configure the module icon, name, and description. You can change the module’s icon by clicking it to select a color and an emoji.

  3. Attach one or more PDF files from your Asset Library. Only files in the “READY” state can be added. You may also add supplementary assets; these are hidden from students but used as knowledge sources for the AI chatbots.

  4. Review the Module Information and visibility setting.

  5. After creating the module, you will be redirected to the Modules page.

If you wish to hide the module from the student view, click “Edit” and switch the visibility to “Hidden from students”.

  1. Select the document chatbot module to start chatting.

  2. Type a question in the textbox on the right side of the page or select one of the suggested questions for each document.

  3. GPTutor answers based on the relevant contents of all uploaded documents. If the documents do not specifically answer the question, GPTutor may answer using general knowledge from the underlying AI model (treat this as less reliable than your uploaded materials).

    References to the documents may be provided in responses. You may click the reference number to navigate to the corresponding page of the document.

    You can also click the buttons such as “Explain using an example” / “Explain using an analogy” or click one of the follow-up questions to continue the conversation.

  4. Provide feedback on the response by moving the mouse over the AI response and selecting the thumbs-up or thumbs-down button. You can also regenerate the AI response.

  5. The left panel shows all documents associated with the document chatbot. You can navigate by clicking a filename, or search for a document by filename.

  6. Hide/show the documents panel (file list and PDF viewer together) using the documents icon in the chat header.

    On desktop, pop the documents panel out into a floating window using the pop-out button in the panel header. Drag, resize, minimize, or maximize the window as needed, then dock it back. Use the chevron on the PDF edge to collapse or expand the file list inside the panel.

  7. Search within the current document by clicking the search button.

  8. Click the document information button to show the document summary and view the suggested questions for the selected document.

  9. Click the back button (<) to navigate back to the conversation list view. You may start a new conversation by typing a new question or selecting an existing conversation.
