Simulation Grading & Rubrics
Simulation grading lets instructors evaluate completed simulation conversations using a rubric. Depending on configuration, grading may be AI-assisted, fully manual, or a hybrid (AI suggests scores/comments, instructor confirms/edits).
Access the grading page
Open your course, then open the target Simulation module and go to the Grading page. The grading page has three tabs: Rubric Management, Conversations, and Settings.

Rubric management
Use the Rubric Management tab to create and maintain rubrics for the module. You can see existing rubrics, their total points, number of grades, and grading criteria at a glance.
To create a new rubric manually, click + Create Rubric.

In the Create Rubric form, fill in the rubric name, total points, description, and custom instructions. You can also set it as the default rubric and add grading criteria with individual weights.

To generate a rubric using AI, click Generate Rubric. Provide total points, custom instructions, and optionally upload a solution/reference file to guide the AI.

To edit, export, set/unset as default, or delete an existing rubric, click the three-dot menu on the rubric card.

Rubric design tips:
- Prefer observable items: “Asked about duration and severity” vs “Asked good questions”.
- Add simple scoring guidance: “0 = missing, 1 = partial, 2 = complete”.
- Keep wording consistent across criteria so grading is consistent across graders.
Grade conversations
Use the Conversations tab to grade completed simulation conversations. The table shows each conversation’s title, module, student, completion status, time, and current grade.

Each conversation row has action buttons on the right:
- View conversation: click the eye icon to open the full conversation transcript.

- View grade details: click the magnifying glass icon to see the grade breakdown with scores, feedback, and AI reasoning for each criterion.

- Re-grade: click the re-grade icon to open the grading modal where you can adjust scores, edit feedback, or trigger Re-Grade with AI.

Bulk grading
To grade multiple conversations at once, select conversations using the
checkboxes, then click Bulk Grade.

Tips for bulk grading:
- Run bulk grading for an initial AI pass.
- Spot-check a sample and refine rubric wording if you see repeated issues.
- Re-grade outliers manually when needed.
Export results
You can export grading data using the buttons at the top of the Conversations tab:
- Export XLSX: exports the raw conversation and grade data as a spreadsheet.

- Export Grading Report: generates a detailed grading report with scores, criteria breakdowns, and summary statistics.

Grading settings
Use the Settings tab to configure auto-grading and grading visibility.

- Enable Auto-Grading: when enabled, student conversations are automatically graded using the selected rubric upon completion. Select the rubric to use from the dropdown.
- Grading visibility: control what students can see after grading:
- Release scores to students: students will see their numeric score and grade.
- Show AI explanation to students: students can view the AI-generated overall feedback.
- Show rubric details to students: when disabled, students will only see their overall score.
Click Edit to modify these settings.
